Boulder River

RFODryFlyParadise

Fast, fun, and loaded with fish.  This is Montana’s best kept secret and hopefully will remain so.  The Boulder river originates in the Absaroka mountains south of Big Timber, Montana and once out of the mountains flows north through the beautiful boulder valley to the Yellowstone River.  The Boulder River is appropriately named with “dinosaur egg” rocks strewn all over the bottom.  Wading is definitely possible but floating is the way to go.  All floating is done in fishing oriented rafts instead of drift boats.  Since the window for floating the Boulder is from early July until the very beginning of August there is a somewhat short season for this river.  The Boulder River is a favorite and has strong following.  Book early for some of the best fishing a person can find in Montana.  Here is a collection of photos that may give one an idea of how truly special the Boulder River is.
