Yellowstone, Boulder, and Stillwater Rivers Report July 2016
The Yellowstone River, Boulder River, and Stillwater Rivers have been under my boat(s) since the beginning of July. Like the water flows in the rest of the state’s rivers, these rivers have well below average flows this year. What this has meant is that the early part of July has seen unusually clear and low waters that have generated great hatches and dependably good fishing. It’s been good (as it should be). We’ve seen the salmon flies come and go, flirted with the pmd’s, going to hang with caddis for the rest of the season and have begun tempting fish with some hopper flies. The hopper isn’t quite there yet (it’s July 10th) but will be soon. It’s been fun rocking and rolling down the Boulder River where the dry/dropper can make even the hardest to please very happy. Like the ride of the Boulder, the Stillwater has been awesome from high to the Yellowstone River. The Yellowstone has been good from Yankee Jim Canyon all the way to Columbus. There have been a few mud plugs from welcomed rains, however there hasn’t been too much of that to cause planning-where-to-go headaches (however right now we’re getting a major blast of water and mud will be with us for a few days see the USGS River Flows Link). Cheers to all that get out there and enjoy these rivers. They are gems and make our days better for getting to be there..
