Spring Flyfishing in Southwest Montana

Spring is definitely high up there on the ranking of my favorite things.  Feeling the warmth of the sun, seeing the green poke its way up into the white…  We’ve had some great fishing lately of the type expected. Dry fly fishing with caddis, march browns and baetis, fishing with some big nymphs under an indicator have all been happening dependent on the spot and day.  Currently, runoff is kicking in with the Yellowstone River fully big and brown, all its tributaries are the same and so its time for tailwaters and spring creeks.  Yesterday was a banner day on Armstrongs Spring Creek.  It was a typical May day where a gore tex Simms or Patagonia coat and complementary waders were fully appreciated.  So were my Smartwool ski socks (I love wearing ski socks in the cold under my waders because they cover the lower leg and have a perfect feet-warmth-preserving thickness).  The Baetis (Blue Winged Olives) came off in the cold and the fish ate both cripples and shallow trailing nymphs.  It was awesome.  The leaves were budding, new snow on the peaks and clean water with eager spring fish.  Oh yeah, it’s good…ArmstongsMay2017 YellowstoneCuttyCaddis2017
