Yellowstone River + Hoppers + Flyrod + Boat = Great Big Smiles Under the Big Sky
The fishing on the Yellowstone River in Montana has at least two prime times. Those being the caddis of the spring (April-ish) and the hopper time of the summer. The Yellowstone is the best river in the state to cast a great big foam hopper into a riffle or along a bank while floating in a drift boat. I know other rivers compare and the Madison, Missouri, Boulder and Stillwater are no slouches during hopper season, but the Yellowstone takes the cake. It’s a big river with lots of structure and lots of fish. Really the only conceivable mistake a person could make in floating the Yellowstone this time of year is to forget the ice for the cooler (or to forget the Morrishes, and Chubbies).
