The fishing on the Yellowstone River in Montana has at least two prime times.  Those being the caddis of the spring (April-ish) and the hopper time of the summer.  The Yellowstone is the best river in the state to cast a great big foam hopper into a riffle or along a bank while floating in a drift boat.  I know other rivers compare and the Madison, Missouri, Boulder and Stillwater are no slouches during hopper season, but the Yellowstone takes the cake.  It’s a big river with lots of structure and lots of fish.  Really the only conceivable mistake a person could make in floating the Yellowstone this time of year is to forget the ice for the cooler (or to forget the Morrishes, and Chubbies).  Take a look at the Yellowstone River near Emigrant, Montana as of about five days ago…
